Haiti’s health system remains under enormous strain. Even Cap Haïtien — spared the worst of the violence concentrated in Port-au-Prince — has felt the pressure. Against that backdrop, the Dr. Jean F. Hibbert Memorial Clinic in Fort Saint Michel continues to see between 85 and 250 patients every month. Under the leadership of our Haitian Medical Director, Dr. Myrlande, the clinic is growing and working on improving quality of care.

‘UNBRIDLED AND STEADFAST HOPE’

CAP-HAÏTIEN, HAITI — Mission 50 in Haiti reframed the horizon of what’s possible for Archangel Airborne at Notre Dame d’Altagrace.

Over four intense days in May, the team moved from observation to re-alignment, securing a shared vision with both the Archbishop of Cap-Haïtien and the new pastor of Notre Dame d’Altagrace while tackling urgent on-the-ground challenges.

The visit combined pastoral partnership with practical problem-solving: We connected with the medical clinic, assessed electrical gaps, and witnessed firsthand a nutrition program that is already changing daily life for local children.

The spirited, joyful welcome from the school community—songs, flowers, and radiant smiles—stood in sharp contrast to the flooded roads, fractured infrastructure and grim expressions outside the parish gates. The jarring juxtaposition underscores both the depth of need and the resilience that defines this mission.

Just as critical were the conversations behind the scenes. Meetings with clinicians serving dozens of patients a day brought to life specific improvements that will be implemented to elevate care quickly, from equipment and leadership support to resolving power and internet connectivity gaps, both of which are critical components that enable cold storage of medicines and tele-health options.

A meeting with archdiocesan leadership laid the groundwork for a more formal partnership and long-term investment in the parish, school, and clinic. What emerged was a clear set of priorities:

• reliable access to clean water

• stronger infrastructure for medical and educational facilities

• expansion of the school lunch program

The key meeting of the trip was with Archbishop of Cap-Haïtien, Monsignor Launay Saturné. He listened carefully, took thorough notes on his phone and asked lots of questions. He expressed his appreciation for Archangel Airborne — and added that the need is great and he wished he could expand the program and have more than just a twinned parish. He would like to see a twinned archdiocese.

Back home, that clarity is translating into action. With Mission 50 complete—and a compassionate medical flight (Mission 51) successfully carried out—Archangel Airborne is already well on its way toward its 2026 mission goals.

The next phase will focus on turning commitments into durable systems: formal agreements with the archdiocese, facility planning, and scaling delivery capabilities to meet growing demand. For supporters, this marks a shift from presence to progress: the needs are defined, the partnerships are real, and the work ahead—urgent, specific, and deeply humanitarian—is now underway.

A successful mission

From the inside, Mission 50 was experienced not only as logistics and planning, but as a work of grace.

“Our last 36 hours in Haiti was as successful as the first, with highly productive meetings with both Bishop Launay. and Fr. Lazare Djempson clearly delineating a strong path of hope for all our current missions at Notre Dame D’Altagrace,” Thad Hunkins, president of Archangel Airborne, wrote as the team boarded the flight back to DC.

In the midst of flooded roads, squalor, and “unbridled and steadfast hope” in the faces of parishioners, that hope became the real cargo Archangel Airborne brought home.

The daily rhythms of the mission were steeped in the life of the parish: 7 a.m. Mass, shared meals with Fr. Lazare, a funeral for a young man whose seminarian brother in Rome could not return, clinical consults, and productive meetings listening to the medical staff.

“Meanwhile, we will continue learning more about Fr. Lazare’s priorities, needs, and challenges to inform you all of how Archangel Airborne can continue serving the Lord’s work in this precious community,” Thad wrote, inviting the team and supporters to see each technical fix and each difficult conversation as an act of service to Christ present in the poor

None of this unfolds without your prayers and spiritual support. “All of your prayers, suggestions, and comments helped guide our efforts all the way,” Thad told the team. Between missions, he has asked each member to “pray about what items from the Mission 50 Haiti trip look MOST important for us to tackle,” signaling that discernment—not only project management—will drive the next steps.

FR. GARY, ARCHANGEL AIRBORNE CHAPLAIN INSTALLED AS AUXILIARY BISHOP OF WASHINGTON

Bishop Gary R. Studniewski, chaplain of Archangel Airborne, along with Bishop Robert P. Boxie III, were ordained on July 7 as auxiliary bishops of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington.

The former pastor of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Washington, DC, Bishop Studniewski has visited Notre Dame D’Altagrace, the twinned parish of St. Peter’s and the focus of Archangel Airborne’s Haiti mission.

At the end of the installation Mass, Bishop Studniewski walked up and down the aisles of the basilica, the largest Catholic church in North America, and offered his blessings to the assembled congregation. When he was finished, he stepped up to address the visitors and said, “That was so much fun. Can we do it one more time?”

A native of Toledo, Ohio, Studniewski served for 18 years as a chaplain in the United States Army, rising to the rank of colonel, before being ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Washington in 1995.

Bishop Studniewski was pastor of the Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament when Pope Leo XIV appointed him to be bishop. The new bishop thanked his parishes for helping form him as a priest and pastor.

Thank you for standing with Archangel Airborne during one of the most challenging periods Haiti has faced in decades. That is saying something. Your generosity allows our team together with Haitian partners to keep critical health services, clean water, and community programs going in the midst of a deepening crisis.

From our earliest missions—flying medical teams and supplies into Haiti’s most underserved area to today’s community-based clinic in Fort Saint Michel—we have always believed that the most effective work is done with local partners, not for them. Our Mission in a Time of Crisis

Haiti is experiencing an acute emergency with ongoing gang violence, widespread displacement and a public health system that UN agencies describe as “nearing collapse.” There are critical shortages of staff, equipment, medicines, and safe water.

Nearly three-quarters of women in many parts of Haiti lack access to basic healthcare and nutrition. Cholera has surged across all 10 departments (akin to counties) since 2022, and acute malnutrition among children under five is rising sharply.

Political instability and security breakdowns—including coordinated gang attacks on police stations, airports, and prisons—have further disrupted access to care, food, education, and livelihoods.

Despite this danger, Archangel Airborne’s mission remains fearless and clear: Combine aviation, medical, and technical expertise with Haitian-led partnerships to bring primary care, clean water, and community health infrastructure to the communities of Cap-Haïtien and La Victoire.

By grounding our work in local leadership and strategic alliances, we manage to deliver high-impact, resilient services that continue even when international teams pull out.

What Your Support Makes Possible

Community-Based Healthcare: Jean F. Hibbert* Memorial Clinic

In 2019, Archangel Airborne changed its practice of conducting clinical operations with US volunteers to empowering Haitian clinicians under the leadership of Dr. Jean Rose Myrlande.

This move at the clinic, based at Notre Dame D’Altagrace in the Fort San Michel shanty town area of Cap-Haïtien, prepared the groundwork for a regular, community-based clinical presence.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and instability, we maintained monthly services, deepened trust and co-developed a shared vision for primary healthcare in the community.

A mobile medical clinic, with the assistance of Food for the Poor, arrived in 2021. The clinic, constructed inside a shipping container, includes a tightly designed reception and intake area, lab space, treatment bays, storage, and solar-ready power.

In 2022—after eight years of planning—the Dr. Jean F. Hibbert Memorial Clinic officially opened its doors in the vacant lot immediately adjacent to the parish school church and rectory next door.

(*Dr. Jean F. Hibbert, who died in 2019, was the former medical operations officer for Archangel Airborne who worked tirelessly to build sustainable economic and public health infrastructure in Haiti.)

In 2023, the clinic shifted from a “pay-what-you-can” model to nearly free care, significantly increasing community demand and prompting us to open more frequently to meet that need.

Our Haitian-led team, now under the medical directorship of Dr. Myrlande, produces regular clinic reports tracking utilization, common conditions, medicines delivered, and operational needs. This critical data guides quality improvement and future investments.

Other major projects at the parish included the installation of solar panels and new restrooms.

Priority upgrades ahead include: hiring a janitor and lab technician; strengthening inventory systems to prevent drug stock-outs; optimizing generator and solar power for 24/7 electricity (including Starlink connectivity); building a permanent shaded waiting area; and establishing a two-way community feedback mechanism.

2025–2026: Building Resilience Amid Crisis

Despite worsening conditions in Haiti, our Haitian partners have kept care and community programs moving forward. Recent and current highlights include:

• Keeping the clinic open and nearly free, with increased patient volumes because of urgent community need.

• Strengthening data gathering and quality through regular Haitian-generated clinic reports, with plans to introduce quality-of-care indicators and targets.

• Advancing links outside Haiti by installing Starlink to enable telemedicine, continuous medical education, remote mentoring, and future electronic medical records and inventory systems.

• Deepening strategic partnerships with Konbit Sante, the Northern Department Ministry of Health, RAD-AID (for imaging and mobile ultrasound and X-ray), JustEnergy (solar and power systems), KORE Haiti, Food for the Poor, Helping Haitian Angels, and others.

  

• Preparing for a hub-and-spoke model by analyzing Primary Mobile Med International assets and exploring how to scale mobile medical clinics as local “health posts” linked to larger referral centers and potential partners like Partners in Health.

STAFFED WITH VETERANS AND SERVING VETERANS

Archangel Airborne is especially committed to the re-missioning of military veterans in appreciation of their training and skill sets, which contribute to the successful tactical execution of mission objectives.

Over the years, Archangel has conducted missions for a variety of reasons, including nine trips for storm relief and eight flights to transport veterans for emergencies and one for an organ transplant.

The Road Ahead: How You Are Helping

Archangel Airborne is a small nonprofit with small administrative overhead. All of the board and officers are unpaid volunteers. There is no rent because we have no office and we work virtually. We only recently moved our address from a private home to a Post Office box. The only employees are our four Haitian medical staff who receive very modest salaries.
